Don’t let your Own Fears Prevent your Children from Skateboarding

17 April 2009

It is no secret that the sport of skateboarding has a bad reputation. We too often hear about kids fallen down from skateboards and getting seriously injured. However, those that have the right equipment to ride on as well as properly fitting safety equipment are less likely to fall into that category.

Parents should be involved in the decision for their children to skateboard. However, you need to have a very open mind about it instead of immediately letting your fears take control. Find out why they are interested in skateboarding.

You can use their passion for skateboarding to help with many things. For example they will be developing skills such as patience and learning the value of practicing when it comes to mastering something that they are interested in. These are skills that can carry over to many areas of their life now and as adults.

You can also set guidelines about where they can ride their skateboard. You may be fine with them going to the local skate park or just hanging out down the block with friends. If you don’t want them skating in certain areas then you need to discuss that with your child.

Granted, it can be difficult to let go of your fears when it comes to your child and skateboarding. However, if you have provided them with guidelines quality skateboards and well as the safety equipment they need then there isn’t really any reason to worry so much.

Instead of letting fear get the best of you, be supportive of your child’s interest in this sport. Encourage them to practice and take the time to watch them perform the skills that they have learned for you. They will take pride in their efforts and you can show them that while you may not have chose that sport yourself, you are always going to be there to support what they take an interest in.
